Can we help? - Which house to choose : Ducks : Chickens : Geese : Turkeys : Rabbits : Other Livestock : | |||||||||||||||||
Shown with optional External Nest Box [with old type lid - click here for new style] and End Release |
Aylesford Portable £210
Carriage £27.00 (surcharges may apply) Very popular unit for up to 6 birds, where it is necessary to contain
stock, for example pure breeds or for use in the garden. The house is made
from sturdy tongue and groove timber and the attached run has an optional
end release to allow you to free range your poultry if required. Complete
with run, carry handle and roosting bars - and the optional extras of nesting box for chickens [ducks don't need one] and end release to allow you to let the birds roam around your garden when it is safe. The optional slide out floor does make cleaning out much easier. Keeping chickens should be mostly fun so features such as these are a good investment in keeping the hassle factor down.

| If you should find yourself within an Avian Influenza shut-in area in years to come should the virus become a problem in Europe then it is very easy to add a plastic or polycarbonate roof to the lid of the run to prevent any contamination from wild birds. The 16mm weldmesh that all our runs are made from complies with the current advice to prevent the smallest wild birds from getting into the run. | |||||||||||||||||
| |||||||||||||||||
| If this is the right size house but you do not want an integral run please take a look at the Swinford | |||||||||||||||||
| If you are keeping the larger sized birds [eg - Orpingtons; Brahmas; Indian Runners etc] or the likes of Indian Runner ducks who like more head room - you would be better looking at the Oxford as this house may be rather low. It is not a good idea to have these bigger breeds with their heads too close to the ventilation. They also take up so much more room. I tend to describe ordinary layers as being a 1 ft by 1 ft box - in these terms the bigger breeds are more like 2 ft x 2 ft boxes :~))) | |||||||||||||||||
| This house is a great choice for breeding medium and small sized chickens and ducks and for up to half a dozen garden layers. It makes a great broody coop especially for larger clutches - protecting the babies from crows; gulls foxes etc but still letting them range and enjoy the benefits of the sunshine.
It is especially useful if you have daytime foxes that threaten the safety of your birds as you can give them access to range in a protected environment - the optional end release means you can let them out to get more garden grubs and pests when you are around. If you would like a chicken house with maybe a little more style and more space then take a look at our Grosvenor Range - also very useful for cats or rabbits. |

| With out the end release you can still get into the run as the weldmesh lid slides or lifts off. Access to the house is through the lid which lifts up - hinged from the front. | |||||||||||||||||
| Obviously if you have ducks you do not need the optional external nestbox - but the slide out floor is definitely more of an essential as they tend to be muckier babies!! | |||||||||||||||||
| We have found over the years that birds much prefer the square shape of poultry houses to triangular Ark shapes. They have much more head room - the birds do not feel constricted at the edges of the pen and access is more convenient. | |||||||||||||||||
| Constructing the unit is very easy - it comes flat packed with all the fiddly bits already assembled in each panel - for example the pophole and its door. The side of the house and its run are a single panel giving the whole unit great structural strength. Find a flat area, one of those battery screwdrivers is great. Simply stand the two sides up either side of the floor and put the back in its place making sure they are all square on the floor. Line up the tops and sides and screw in the already fitted screws. Do the same with the front and then the end of the run [which already has the end release door in place if you have chosen it]. Screw the house to the base [slide in the floor if you have that option]. Sit the run lid on the run.
If you have a nestbox put it into the hole in the side provided and screw into place. The hinges for the nestbox lid are fitted on the side so you simply put the lid in place and screw down. Put the house top [which is complete with its onduline] on - hinges to the front and screw. Shavings in the floor and nestbox; feeder and drinker in place; move on to the grass and, hey presto, one posh palace for your babies is ready in no time at all. It is an easy unit to move about - one at each end to move it some distance or just move one end at a time to move it to the next patch of grass. The strong construction prevents it twisting and racking. If you are on your own you can get the wheels that fit at the house end. You lift the house up and the wheels go underneath. Go to the other end and you have a sturdy 2 wheeled wheelbarrow that is easy to take for a walk !!! Once in position again - lift up the house and rotate the wheels out to sit behind the house out of the way. |
