SOME HELPFUL HINTS TO CHOOSING THE RIGHT HOUSE FOR YOU AND YOUR DUCKS
Which house to choose : Ducks

The house you choose depends on a number of criteria - probably the most critical is the size of the breed you are choosing to get. It is NEVER a good idea to keep only one duck and no decent breeder should sell you one to keep alone. They are flock animals and humans make very poor ducks.

Reasons to buy a larger unit that suggested here are :

  • You are just starting out and are pretty sure you will be expanding your flock in the next year. 2 houses are more expensive than one larger one.
  • However if you are interested in breeding in the future and the expansion may be into a different breed then one house per breed is best as it allows you to separate the birds in the breeding season so what you incubate is pure.
  • You live in the northern parts of the UK. Our nights are very long in the winter and so the birds spend a lot more time indoors. They appreciate the extra space and mucking out is less frequent
  • You have very busy lives outwith caring for your ducks and want to reduce the frequency of the mucking out.

    Siting your Duck house
This requires some careful thought and maybe some preparation so as not to end up with a muddy mess and everyone hating the ducks. The principles to remember are that ducks can carry a deal of water in their feathers as they go to bed. Siting the house AWAY FROM THE POND shortens the walk for you on a wet evening and means they will discard some of this before they get inside. It also allows you to get around behind them in case of anyone deciding to stay on the pond for the night. Routine means they soon learn to be waiting about between house and pond at dusk.

ALL domestic ducks must be SHUT in at night. Other than one or two islands there will be one or two of a range of predators happy to take your pals for their tea - foxes, badgers, mink, otter, polecat, etc. A number of these can swim. Islands in the middle of ponds are irrelevant as domestic ducks have no sense of self preservation and do not know that it might be safer there from some predators. In fact islands are a nuisance as a broody bird is very vulnerable if she chooses there to sit. Getting her off is a matter of some difficulty. The best time to shut ducks in is just before dusk. If you leave it just too long you can find they have returned to the pond and persuading them off again can be problematic in the dark.

Most of our houses are easy to move around and identifying a couple of sites in your garden / field for the house to go at different times of the year is best. This allows you to move it between them as the area around the house gets mucky with web footed traffic and enables it to recover. To create a more WELL DRAINED area use soft rounded gravel in a pile with a flattened top. The house can sit on this and it is very easy to rake off around the house and even give is a gentle but thorough hosing to clean the area once in a while.

    SPACE FOR A PEN
    These are very useful :-

  • In the first few weeks of owning your new birds when you are training them to your routine of coming in at night. Line the pen sides up to a fence line and you can herd the birds in. Even better get them used to their evening feed being in the pen and they will soon get the hang of it. They will then be easy to walk inside at dusk.
  • In the Spring and Autumn as dusk moves around so much just as families are busy in the evening. You can shut them into their pen as you go out if you are not due to return before dusk. They are then safe and secure.
  • - Breeding time - ducklings are very vulnerable to and highly prized by the likes of crows and gulls who can kill a clutch in a matter of hours. They need protection from these and other such predators like rats, and birds of prey. Our house and run units [like the Aylesford] are made with 16mm weldmesh so provide great protection. To create a larger space then the Run Panels are perfect - simply choose the number you need - link together and cover with the predator netting.
